Notes for 12.1.2022 (final one of the season!)
Notes:
Final meeting with D as facilitator
brandon: observed space through forum. saw the great leaps and bounds folks have made through the notes on the forum, reminds us that this work is day to day not just tomorrow fix- and to stay motivated and ready to work.
H: spoke to transformative justice- work reminds them that systemic shifts at times may not be the only factor that is necessary to consider- everyday processes and practices are also as important toward resolution.
R: holds that systemic critique is important too, leans into transformative justice and language and assisted with how meetings and conversations were held this past week- trust and accountability is priority- conflict and pain are going to be carried too, was able to use some of the tools around communication guideposts to have some resolve in conversation. additional notes “I think we are talking about challenging the systemic construction of VALUE we have received. I believe we are trying to practice a revaluing of value.”
H: def agrees that there is connection between systems and practices and processes. there is necessary engagement that should happen as to not lose sight of what needs to shift. also ids how white supremacy is as systemic as is practice- looks to centering voices as a means to upend those practices. looks to the recalibration notes on the forum and sits with how voices have been ignored and overly centered in proposals. Curious to complete how history and archive is used to center and decenter others experiences.
LLK: Sitting with how some of the difficulties of participating at Resonate as a single person, different skills, when power is built without inclusive practice (d’s interpret: legacy relationships, alt issues that aren’t always transparent) the history of Resonate and current ways of communication does not take into account how people come to Resonate- disillusioned, in pain w. system, and desiring to create community with like minded people. thinking about how to contribute and not disrupt some of the work that is conducted on the forum.
R: wants to further explore z’s recent contribution, and comments. the sociality of text does create an alienating situation, and this is important. convo in the forum, noticed that in convo- a mention of an alternative system of organizing seemed to not follow in good faith response to the proposal.
d: archive and history is important when bringing forth proposals, so initiatives that are already in place are recognized and considered
b: reflecting on coop jackson- proposals even if they are awesome, can be overwhelming because work is already so strained. very important to center voices, and acknowledging folks that are doing day to day labor. “for shit to resonate, there has to be a sense of connection, and work together”
llk: there is some top down hierarchy that is oriented just simply due to gaining capital to equitably sustain the labor that goes into working- sits with the contradiction, as there is also a grassroots orientation around how the work should be done. resonate needs to decide what the goal should be, what is the current aim and identity in real time and down the future.
D: coops are tools. thinking through strategy as we are operating in capitalism is important.
r: conditions of trust and confusion, “adds to weight” of the moment. binary avoidant, thinking through what complicated situations can bring forth, what are practices that help build trust to do this work.
H: also feels that there has been confusion, and truth- common ground could be established through acknowledging both instances. moving forward and linking the discussion to some of the reading, reflecting w// cole’s work- now later- intention is not enough, erasure of work can happen if not considered, what is the way forward as well when harm is done. even w/ level of accountability, - if intention isn’t enough and harm is caused, there is a disconnect. one persons well meaning intention has caused harm, what is the way forward? there should be an accountability process. how can the harm be repaired not as an individual but as a collective initiative to help create a better place where convos w/o judgement can happen, and could also help repair trust
b: agrees with H, remembers the worker retrospective space as a ground or place to do this type of conflict resolution, and there absolutely needs to be one. thinks about self-criticism as one tool that could be useful
r: wants to speak to harm- there can be situations where intent is not there, harm can be realized through confusion, the sense of harm also should be respected. understood moments and meetings to be open spaces to pull other people in to convo- in particular, z, was invited to come in and contribute ( d’s notes- there is a moment here now that explains why procedure is important in how information is shared) wants to note that r sees structure, but barebones. the intention of that meeting was not to propose but to share a map. “People thought the synch up meeting was a meeting with Justifay. folks noted they were confused about the premise of the meeting”
llk: does not think ‘confusion’ is an effective descriptor of how contradiction exists. The conflicts can come from other places, in particular historical relationships and unknown conversations/ generalizations that were made before that conversation. conflicts are not being resolved and that carries into how we resolve contradictions.
d: capitalist orientation and hierarchy should one person be the absolute for convo. how can we counteract that - and hold the role as exec not as a conductor, but as a person who watches and reminds people of how we are moving together?
d: closing notes: very excited for the future of this working group- please add notes to doc for AGM for future iterations and suggestions on how this group can be run. In spring (Feb 2023, will hold a reading group on Noise Uprising) not exclusive to Resonate members, will keep folks in the loop on what that’ll look like and probably post in forum
